Causes of bad breath and how to prevent it
Bad breaths can be a point of embarrassment for many, and let’s be frank here; no one wants to be called out for a smelly mouth. But it doesn’t stop here, as the odor-filled mouth can cause more severe problems like gum diseases. Let’s see more on the causes of bad breath from the stomach.
What causes bad breath, and how to resolve it?
1. Lack of Proper Oral Hygiene
The primary cause of bad breath is poor oral hygiene. What happens is when you don’t brush and floss your teeth daily, the food you’ve consumed remains stuck in between your teeth and around the gums.
These food particles attract fungi and bacteria that produce foul-smelling waste products (known as volatile sulfur compounds) in your mouth. This is what causes bad breath or halitosis in medical terms. Additionally, if you don’t clean your tongue regularly, that also causes bad breath.
Doctors and specialists advise brushing and flossing teeth and mouth at least twice a day to maintain proper oral hygiene. While you’re brushing your teeth, brush the roof of your mouth and your tongue, using regular toothpaste, which will help clean adverse compounds.
Also, doctors recommend gargling or washing your mouth with plain water after consuming some food items or having some drinks.
2. Dry Mouth
Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia in medical terms, is associated as a cause of bad breath. Factors that cause dry mouth are:
- Dietary habits (like dieting or crash dieting).
- Salivary gland problems.
- Continuous breathing through the mouth.
The role of saliva in the mouth is to moisten it to neutralize the acids produced by plaque. It also washes away the dead cells that accumulate on the tongue, gums, and cheeks. But due to dry mouth, the production of saliva becomes less, which further makes these cells decompose, and therefore bad breath is formed in your mouth area.
Having lots and lots of water is a must to maintain the moisture of your mouth. You can also opt for chewing sugar gums or sucking sugarless candies that generate saliva production in your mouth glands. Gums and mints containing xylitol are best.
3. Include More Fruits and Vegetables in Your Diet
Certain crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, pears, carrots, and celery help our mouth produce more saliva, further washes off the nasty odor from our mouth. It’s like a natural brush system for the mouth.
Also, you should avoid overeating meat and protein, as the protein is fuel for the bacteria which causes bad breath.
Likewise, try and avoid eatables like onion and garlic, which cause a prominent lousy smell in the mouth. The smell in these food items very quickly transfers to the bloodstream, and the air you breathe out picks up the smell from the lungs.
4. Less or No Intake of Tobacco and Smoke
Cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco-based products are harmful to your dental health and cause other health issues like cancer. It leaves a bad smell in your mouth, which frankly is not solving your purpose in any which way.

Additionally, don’t drink excessive alcohol as that dries the mouth.
5. Consult a Physician

He/ she will understand the root cause of your problem. If your issue is of oral origin, he will either treat your gum disease or refer you to a periodontist, a dentist specializing in treating gum conditions.
If your issue is not because of oral problems and your mouth is healthy, he/ she will help you understand the root cause and work on it.
Remember, bad breath is treatable, but taking regular hygienic precautions and steps is something you have to inculcate in your life. After all, no pain, no gain.
